Spiritual Tourism in Rajasthan: Pushkar, Ajmer, Nathdwara and Jain Temples

Rajasthan's sacred sites range from a desert lake town and a great Sufi shrine to some of India's finest Jain temples.

Rajasthan is best known for forts and palaces, but it is also a major pilgrimage state. Pushkar, with its sacred lake and one of the very few temples to Brahma, sits 15 km from Ajmer, home to the dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti. Near Udaipur are Shrinathji at Nathdwara and the Eklingji temple, and in the Aravalli hills stand the Jain temples of Ranakpur and Dilwara.

In the Shekhawati region, Khatu Shyam Ji and Salasar Balaji draw huge crowds, and Karni Mata near Bikaner is famous for the rats revered in its courtyard.

Quick answer

Rajasthan's main spiritual destinations are Pushkar (the lake, ghats and Brahma temple), the Ajmer Sharif dargah, Shrinathji at Nathdwara and Eklingji near Udaipur, the Jain temples of Ranakpur and Dilwara at Mount Abu, Khatu Shyam Ji and Salasar Balaji in Shekhawati, and Karni Mata near Bikaner. October to March is the best time; the Pushkar fair falls in the month of Kartik.

Where to stay

  • Pushkar: guesthouses and small hotels by the lake; the town is vegetarian and alcohol is not served near the ghats.
  • Ajmer: hotels near the dargah for early visits, or stay in Pushkar.
  • Udaipur: the best base for Nathdwara, Eklingji and Ranakpur.
  • Mount Abu: hill-station hotels near Nakki Lake for Dilwara.

Etiquette notes

  • Pushkar's ghats are sacred: remove shoes, do not photograph people bathing, and decline pushy offers of 'free' puja.
  • Cover your head at Ajmer Sharif; caps and scarves are sold nearby.
  • At Nathdwara, darshan happens at set times (jhankis) through the day; plan around them.
  • At Karni Mata, walk carefully; the rats are revered, and seeing a white one is considered lucky.

Safety

  • Darshan waits vary from minutes to many hours; no one can guarantee quick darshan, so plan buffer time.
  • Dress modestly and follow each place of worship's rules on dress, phones and photography.
  • Carry water and sun protection; Rajasthan's heat is intense from April to June.
  • Follow Jain temple rules on leather and food at Ranakpur and Dilwara.

What to pack

  • Light cotton clothing and a shawl for winter nights
  • Head covering for Ajmer
  • Non-leather items for Jain temples
  • Hat and sunscreen
