Spiritual Tourism in Uttar Pradesh: Varanasi, Ayodhya, Prayagraj and Braj

Uttar Pradesh holds more of Hinduism's most sacred cities than any other state, along with key Buddhist and Sufi sites.

4 min read · Updated September 2026

Uttar Pradesh is the heartland of many Hindu pilgrimages: Varanasi (Kashi) on the Ganga, Ayodhya on the Saryu, Prayagraj at the confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna, and the Braj region around Mathura and Vrindavan, linked with Krishna. It also holds three of the great Buddhist sites, Sarnath, Kushinagar and Shravasti, and much-visited Sufi shrines.

The main towns are well connected by rail, road and air. Ayodhya's airport opened in December 2023, and Varanasi, Prayagraj, Lucknow, Gorakhpur and Agra also have airports.

Quick answer

Uttar Pradesh's main spiritual destinations are Varanasi (the ghats, Ganga Aarti and Kashi Vishwanath), Ayodhya (the Ram Mandir and Hanuman Garhi), Prayagraj (the Triveni Sangam), and Mathura, Vrindavan, Govardhan and Barsana in Braj. Sarnath, Kushinagar and Shravasti are major Buddhist sites. October to March is the best time; Holi in Braj and Dev Deepawali in Varanasi are special but crowded.

Key takeaways

  • Varanasi, Ayodhya and Prayagraj form a popular pilgrimage triangle.
  • Mathura, Vrindavan, Govardhan and Barsana make up the Braj circuit, a short drive from Delhi and Agra.
  • Sarnath, Kushinagar and Shravasti are three of the great Buddhist sites.
  • October to March is best; summers are very hot.
  • Holi in Braj, Dev Deepawali in Varanasi and the Magh Mela at Prayagraj are highlights.
