Patiala was founded in 1763 by Baba Ala Singh and grew into the capital of the princely state of Patiala, one of the largest and wealthiest in Punjab. Its maharajas were famous for their lavish lifestyle, patronage of sport and music, and a few inventions attributed to them, including the generous 'Patiala peg'.
The things to do in Patiala centre on its royal buildings: Qila Mubarak in the old city, the Sheesh Mahal and its museum, and the grand Moti Bagh Palace. Add Gurdwara Dukh Niwaran Sahib, the Kali Devi Temple, and the bazaars known for the Patiala salwar, juttis and parandas.
One day covers the main sights; two allow a relaxed pace and a trip to Bahadurgarh Fort or Fatehgarh Sahib. Patiala is about 70 km from Chandigarh.
