Puri, on the coast of Odisha, is one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage sites and the home of Lord Jagannath, a form of Vishnu worshipped with his siblings Balabhadra and Subhadra. The 12th-century temple dominates the town, and the annual Rath Yatra, when the deities ride huge chariots through the streets, draws millions.
The things to do in Puri include darshan at the Jagannath Temple and tasting its Mahaprasad, walking the long beach where sand artists work, visiting the Gundicha Temple and the painters' village of Raghurajpur. Konark's Sun Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Chilika Lake, Asia's largest brackish-water lagoon, are easy day trips.
Two to three days is ideal. October to March is the best season; the Rath Yatra falls in June or July.
For how to get there, when to go and where to stay, see our Puri travel guide.

Eat Mahaprasad
The temple kitchen, one of the largest in the world, cooks food in earthen pots on wood fires. After being offered to Jagannath, it is sold as Mahaprasad at Ananda Bazar inside the temple complex. Rice, dal, vegetables and sweets are served on leaf plates.
Witness the Rath Yatra

During the Rath Yatra, in June or July, Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra are brought out in three towering wooden chariots, newly built each year, and pulled by devotees along the Grand Road to the Gundicha Temple. Crowds are immense; book stays months in advance and follow official guidance.

Visit the Gundicha Temple

The Gundicha Temple, at the other end of the Grand Road, is where the deities stay for about a week during the Rath Yatra. It sits in a garden and is calmer at other times.
