Best Beaches in Odisha: Puri, Chandrabhaga, Gopalpur and Chandipur

Odisha's beaches sit beside some of India's great temples and one of the world's largest turtle nesting sites. Here is how they compare.

4 min read · Updated September 2026

Odisha's coastline runs for about 480 km along the Bay of Bengal, from the West Bengal border to Andhra Pradesh. Its beaches are wide, flat and sandy, and many are tied to pilgrimage: Puri with the Jagannath Temple and Konark with the Sun Temple, both part of the popular Golden Triangle of Odisha with Bhubaneswar.

The coast is also a major nesting ground for olive ridley sea turtles, and Chilika, Asia's largest brackish-water lagoon, lies just inland. The best time to visit is October to February; the coast is exposed to cyclones, especially in October and November and before the monsoon.

Quick answer

The best beaches in Odisha are Puri's Golden Beach, which holds Blue Flag certification, Chandrabhaga and Ramchandi near Konark, Gopalpur and the Blue Flag Sunapur beach in Ganjam, Chandipur, where the sea recedes several kilometres at low tide, and quiet Talasari near the Bengal border. Visit from October to February and check cyclone warnings. At Puri, bathe only in guarded zones.

Key takeaways

  • Puri's Golden Beach has Blue Flag certification and traditional lifeguards (nuliyas) in the bathing zone.
  • Chandrabhaga is about 3 km from the Konark Sun Temple.
  • Chandipur is known for the sea retreating several kilometres at low tide.
  • Rushikulya and Gahirmatha are among the world's largest olive ridley nesting sites.
  • October to February is best; watch for cyclone warnings in October and November.
