Wildlife Tourism in Odisha: Similipal, Bhitarkanika and Chilika

Odisha combines tiger forests, mangroves, Asia's largest brackish lagoon and some of the world's biggest sea-turtle nesting beaches.

4 min read · Updated September 2026

Odisha has two tiger reserves, Similipal and Satkosia, along with Bhitarkanika's mangroves, the Chilika lagoon and a long coastline where olive ridley turtles nest in huge numbers. Similipal was one of India's original nine Project Tiger reserves in 1973.

Much of Odisha's wildlife is seen by boat: saltwater crocodiles in Bhitarkanika's creeks, Irrawaddy dolphins on Chilika, and gharials in the Mahanadi at Satkosia. It is an easy add-on to a Puri, Konark and Bhubaneswar trip.

Quick answer

Odisha's main wildlife destinations are Similipal Tiger Reserve, known for sal forest, waterfalls and melanistic tigers; Bhitarkanika National Park, with India's largest population of saltwater crocodiles; Chilika lake for Irrawaddy dolphins at Satapada and winter birds at Mangalajodi; and Satkosia on the Mahanadi. Similipal usually opens in November and closes in the monsoon; Bhitarkanika closes from May to July for crocodile nesting.

Key takeaways

  • Similipal was one of India's first nine tiger reserves and has rare melanistic tigers.
  • Bhitarkanika has India's largest population of saltwater crocodiles.
  • Bhitarkanika closes from 1 May to 31 July for crocodile breeding.
  • Chilika has Irrawaddy dolphins at Satapada and huge flocks of winter birds.
  • Olive ridley turtles nest in mass at Gahirmatha and Rushikulya in late winter.

Olive ridley turtles

Olive ridleys come ashore together in mass nesting events, called arribadas, at Gahirmatha, Rushikulya and Devi river mouth, usually between about February and April. Hatchlings emerge around 45 to 60 days later. Visits at Rushikulya are organised with the forest department and local volunteers; watch from a distance and never use lights on the beach at night.

Where to stay and how long

Similipal has forest department nature camps inside and hotels in Baripada. Bhitarkanika has forest lodges at Dangmal and hotels at Chandbali. For Chilika, stay at Satapada, Barkul or Mangalajodi's eco-cottages, or visit from Puri. Two nights each for Similipal and Bhitarkanika, and a day for Chilika, make a good week.

Safety

  • Sightings are never guaranteed; plan several drives and enjoy the landscape itself.
  • Stay in the vehicle or boat and follow your guide.
  • Book permits only through official forest department portals or trusted operators.
  • Never feed animals or leave litter in a park.
  • Crocodiles live in Bhitarkanika's creeks; never put hands in the water.

What to pack

  • Hat, sunscreen and water for boats
  • Warm layer for Similipal nights
  • Binoculars
