Heritage Tourism in Odisha: Konark, Temple Towns and Living Crafts

Odisha, ancient Kalinga, holds the Sun Temple at Konark, a city of hundreds of temples and some of India's finest living crafts.

4 min read · Updated September 2026

Odisha was the ancient kingdom of Kalinga, whose conquest by Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE, according to his own edicts, led him to turn towards Buddhism. Later dynasties, especially the Somavamshis and the Eastern Gangas, built the temples of Bhubaneswar, Puri and Konark in the distinctive Kalinga style.

The Sun Temple at Konark was inscribed by UNESCO in 1984. Odisha is also known for its living crafts, its Odissi dance and music, and its weaving traditions.

A short history

Ashoka's Kalinga war, recorded in his edicts at Dhauli and Jaugada, is one of the best-documented events of early Indian history. Around the 1st century BCE, Kharavela ruled a powerful Kalinga kingdom, recorded in the Hathigumpha inscription. Buddhist monasteries flourished for centuries, and from about the 7th century the Shailodbhavas, Bhaumakaras, Somavamshis and Eastern Gangas built the great temples. Odisha later came under Afghan, Mughal, Maratha and British rule, and became a separate province in 1936.

Where to stay

Bhubaneswar is the most practical base, with good hotels and quick access to Dhauli, Udayagiri and Khandagiri, and the temples. Puri has seaside hotels and is 35 km from Konark; Konark itself has a few simpler places to stay. For the Diamond Triangle, stay in Bhubaneswar or Cuttack and go for the day.

Getting around

Bhubaneswar has an airport and good rail links. Puri, Konark and Bhubaneswar form a triangle of short drives, and Raghurajpur is about 14 km from Puri. For the Buddhist sites near Jajpur, a car and driver is the easiest option.

Lesser-known heritage

  • The Chausath Yogini temple at Hirapur, an unusual circular, roofless shrine.
  • Bhubaneswar's Old Town around the Bindu Sagar tank, with dozens of smaller temples.
  • Barabati fort in Cuttack.
  • Chilika Lake's fishing villages and the Kalijai island shrine.

Visiting temples respectfully

Many of Odisha's temples are in active worship. Some, including the Jagannath temple in Puri and the Lingaraj temple in Bhubaneswar, admit only Hindus; the Lingaraj can be seen from a viewing platform outside. Elsewhere, remove shoes, dress modestly and ask before photographing rituals.

When to go

  • October to March: the best season.
  • June or July: the Rath Yatra in Puri, which draws enormous crowds.
  • December: the Konark Dance Festival.
  • April to June: hot and humid.

Safety

  • Timings, weekly closures and tickets change; check the ASI, state tourism or the site before you go.
  • Living temples, mosques and shrines set their own rules on dress, entry and photography; follow what is posted.

What to pack

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Scarf or shawl for places of worship
  • Hat, sunscreen and water
  • Photo ID for tickets
