Spiritual Tourism in Odisha: Puri, Bhubaneswar and Konark

Odisha's golden triangle of Puri, Bhubaneswar and Konark holds one of the four dhams, a city of temples and a UNESCO sun temple.

4 min read · Updated September 2026

Puri's Jagannath Temple, one of the four dhams of India, is the heart of Odisha's religious life, and its annual Rath Yatra is one of the country's great festivals. An hour away, Bhubaneswar is known as a city of temples, with the Lingaraj and dozens of older shrines in the Kalinga style, and the Sun Temple at Konark is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Odisha also has important Jain and Buddhist heritage: the rock-cut caves of Udayagiri and Khandagiri, the Shanti Stupa at Dhauli near the site of the Kalinga war, and the monastic ruins of Ratnagiri, Udayagiri and Lalitgiri.

Quick answer

Odisha's main spiritual destinations are the Jagannath Temple in Puri (which admits only Hindus) with its Rath Yatra in June or July, the Lingaraj and other temples of Bhubaneswar, the Sun Temple at Konark, the Jain caves of Udayagiri and Khandagiri, Dhauli, and the Buddhist sites of Ratnagiri, Udayagiri and Lalitgiri. Puri, Konark and Bhubaneswar are within about 65 km of each other. October to March is the best time.

Key takeaways
