Spiritual Tourism in Tamil Nadu: Madurai, Rameswaram and the Great Temple Towns

Tamil Nadu is the land of great temple towns, where towering gopurams, daily rituals and festivals shape the life of each place.

4 min read · Updated September 2026

Tamil Nadu has some of India's largest and most active temples, many of them centuries old and still at the centre of their towns. Madurai's Meenakshi Temple, Srirangam's Ranganathaswamy, Rameswaram's Ramanathaswamy and the Chola temples of Thanjavur are among the best known.

The state is also home to the six abodes of Murugan (Arupadai Veedu), the Navagraha temples around Kumbakonam, and important Christian and Sufi shrines at Velankanni and Nagore. Temple dress codes are taken seriously here, and rituals follow fixed daily timings.

A temple route from Chennai to Kanyakumari takes about nine to ten days. October to March is the best time.
