Rameswaram lies on Pamban Island, between the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay, linked to the mainland by road and rail bridges. It is one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage sites and has one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. According to the Ramayana, Rama worshipped Shiva here and built a bridge to Lanka from its shores.
The things to do in Rameswaram start at the Ramanathaswamy Temple, with its immense corridors and ritual baths in 22 wells. Beyond the temple are the Pamban bridges, the ruined town of Dhanushkodi destroyed by a cyclone in 1964, the road's end at Arichal Munai, and the memorial to former President APJ Abdul Kalam, who grew up here.
One to two days is enough. October to April is the best time.
