Kodaikanal, at about 2,100 metres in the Palani hills of Dindigul district, was founded in 1845 by American missionaries as a refuge from the heat of the plains. Its star-shaped lake, created in 1863, is the centre of town, and old schools, churches and bungalows dot the slopes. It is often called the Princess of Hill Stations.
The things to do in Kodaikanal include boating and cycling around the lake, walks along Coaker's Walk and through pine forests, viewpoints such as Pillar Rocks and Green Valley View, waterfalls, forest lakes such as Berijam, and villages like Poombarai with terraced farms. Homemade chocolate and eucalyptus oil are local specialities.
Two to three days is ideal. April to June and September to November are popular; winters are cold and clear.
