Yercaud, at about 1,500 metres in the Shevaroy hills of Salem district, is a small hill station reached by a road with 20 hairpin bends. It was developed by the British in the 19th century, and coffee, pepper and orange estates still cover its slopes. It is often called the jewel of the south, and it is quieter and less expensive than Ooty or Kodaikanal.
The things to do in Yercaud are relaxed: boating on the lake, viewpoints such as Lady's Seat and Pagoda Point, the Shevaroyan Temple at the highest point, Kiliyur Falls, gardens and coffee estate walks, and a scenic drive around the Loop Road.
One to two days is enough. October to June is the best time; the May summer festival brings flower shows and crowds.
