4 min read · Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu, India

Kanyakumari, at the southern tip of mainland India, is where the Arabian Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal meet. The town is named after Kanya Kumari, the virgin goddess whose temple stands on the shore. Swami Vivekananda meditated on a rock offshore in 1892, and a memorial now stands there.

The things to do in Kanyakumari are simple but memorable: watch the sunrise and sunset over the sea, take the ferry to the Vivekananda Rock Memorial and Thiruvalluvar statue, visit the Kumari Amman Temple and the Gandhi Memorial, and take day trips to the carved temple at Suchindram and the wooden Padmanabhapuram Palace.

One to two days is enough. October to March is the best time.

For how to get there, when to go and where to stay, see our Kanyakumari travel guide.
