Tamil Nadu's hill stations sit in two ranges. The Western Ghats hold the Nilgiris (Ooty, Coonoor, Kotagiri), the Palani hills (Kodaikanal) and the Anamalai hills (Valparai), all tea and forest country. The Eastern Ghats hold smaller hill towns such as Yercaud near Salem, Yelagiri near Vellore and the Kolli Hills near Namakkal.
Ooty and Kodaikanal are among the busiest hill stations in India in April and May, and both require an e-pass for most outside vehicles.

A little history
Ooty (Udhagamandalam) was developed from the 1820s and became the summer headquarters of the Madras Presidency. Kodaikanal was founded in the 1840s by American missionaries as a refuge from the heat and disease of the plains. The Nilgiris are the home of the Toda, Kota, Irula, Kurumba and Badaga communities, whose presence in the hills long predates the hill stations.
Where to stay
Ooty town is busy; Coonoor, Kotagiri and the tea estates offer quieter stays, including heritage bungalows. In Kodaikanal, stays near the lake are central, while those further out have better views. Book early for April, May and long weekends.
Good combinations
- Ooty and Coonoor with a toy-train ride (three to four days).
- Ooty, Kodaikanal and Munnar in about a week.
- Ooty with Mudumalai and Masinagudi for wildlife.
- Yercaud or Yelagiri as a short break from Bengaluru or Chennai.
Food and shopping
The Nilgiris are known for homemade chocolates, varkey biscuits, eucalyptus oil and, of course, tea; Kodaikanal also sells chocolates and plums. Estate shops in Coonoor and Kotagiri sell tea straight from the factory, and some offer tastings.
When to go
- October to February: cool, clear and quieter.
- March to June: warm plains make the hills busy, especially April and May.
- June to September: the Nilgiris get the south-west monsoon; Kodaikanal is less wet but still rainy at times.
