Wildlife Tourism in Tamil Nadu: Mudumalai, Anamalai and Bird Sanctuaries

Tamil Nadu's wildlife lives in the Nilgiris and Anamalai hills and along its wetlands and coast. Here is where to go.

4 min read · Updated September 2026

Tamil Nadu has five tiger reserves: Mudumalai, Anamalai, Sathyamangalam, Kalakad-Mundanthurai and Srivilliputhur-Megamalai, the last declared in 2021. Mudumalai sits in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, joined to Bandipur and Wayanad.

The state animal, the Nilgiri tahr, lives on the high grasslands of the Nilgiris and Anamalais. On the plains, village tanks such as Vedanthangal and Koonthankulam fill with nesting birds in winter, and the Gulf of Mannar protects coral reefs and seagrass.

Quick answer

Tamil Nadu's main wildlife destinations are Mudumalai Tiger Reserve near Ooty, with forest department safaris and the Theppakadu elephant camp; Anamalai Tiger Reserve, including Topslip and Valparai, known for lion-tailed macaques; Mukurthi National Park for the Nilgiri tahr; and bird sanctuaries such as Vedanthangal, Koonthankulam and Point Calimere. October to March suits birds; Mudumalai is best from about December to May.

Bird sanctuaries

Vedanthangal, near Chennai, has hosted nesting birds for centuries under village protection. Koonthankulam and Point Calimere are known for pelicans, storks and flamingos.

The coast and wetlands

The Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park protects 21 islands between Rameswaram and Tuticorin, with coral reefs, seagrass beds and dugongs, though access to the islands is restricted. Glass-bottom boat trips run from some points.

Pulicat lake, north of Chennai, draws flamingos and pelicans in winter, and Point Calimere has one of the largest gatherings of waders and flamingos on India's east coast.

Tips

  • Book Mudumalai safaris at Theppakadu early in the morning; queues build quickly on weekends.
  • Keep windows closed and food out of sight around macaques in Valparai.
  • Visit bird sanctuaries early in the morning, when birds are feeding and the heat is lower.
