Wildlife Tourism in Uttarakhand: Corbett, Rajaji and the High Himalaya

Uttarakhand runs from the terai forests of Corbett to high Himalayan valleys. Here is where to go for tigers, elephants, birds and mountain wildlife.

4 min read · Updated September 2026

Uttarakhand had an estimated 560 tigers in the 2022 assessment, the third highest of any state, most of them in and around Jim Corbett National Park and Rajaji Tiger Reserve. Both lie in the foothills, within a day's drive of Delhi.

Higher up, the state's forests and alpine meadows hold Himalayan birds, musk deer, Himalayan tahr, black bears and, in the far north, snow leopards. The Nanda Devi and Valley of Flowers national parks form a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Quick answer

Uttarakhand's main wildlife destination is Jim Corbett National Park, with tigers, elephants and zones such as Dhikala, Bijrani, Jhirna and Dhela. Rajaji Tiger Reserve near Haridwar has elephants and tigers. Pangot and Sattal near Nainital are known for Himalayan birds. Corbett's Dhikala zone opens from 15 November to 15 June, while Jhirna and Dhela stay open all year.

Where to stay

  • Dhikala forest lodge, inside Corbett: basic but unique, booked through the official Corbett portal and quickly sold out.
  • Ramnagar and the Kosi river road: most resorts, close to Bijrani and Jhirna gates.
  • Rajaji: stays in Rishikesh, Haridwar or near the Chilla gate.
  • Pangot and Sattal: small lodges and homestays in the forest near Nainital.

How many days to spend

Two nights in Corbett allow three or four drives in different zones; a night inside Dhikala adds a lot to any trip. Add two nights for birding around Nainital, or a day at Rajaji if you are travelling via Rishikesh. From Delhi, a long weekend works for Corbett alone.

Tips

  • Book Dhikala permits and the forest lodge the day bookings open.
  • Take drives in more than one zone; each has different terrain.
  • Carry your ID for checks at every gate.
