Things to Do in Nainital: Lake, Viewpoints & the Kumaon Lake District

A green lake ringed by forested hills, a Mall Road built for evening strolls, and a chain of quieter lakes and orchards just beyond town.

6 min read · Nainital, Uttarakhand, India

Nainital is a hill town at about 2,000 metres in the Kumaon hills of Uttarakhand, built around the pear-shaped Naini Lake. It was developed as a summer retreat by the British in the 1840s, and later served as the summer capital of the United Provinces. Today it is one of the most popular hill stations in North India, especially for families from Delhi NCR.

Most things to do in Nainital are around the lake and on the ridges above it: boating, the Naina Devi Temple, the Mall Road, the ropeway and short walks to viewpoints. The real advantage of a longer stay is the Kumaon lake district nearby, with Bhimtal, Sattal and Naukuchiatal, and orchard towns such as Mukteshwar.

Two days covers the town; three to four lets you explore the lakes around it. Weekends and summer holidays are very busy.

For how to get there, when to go and where to stay, see our Nainital travel guide.
