South India's hill stations sit in the Western Ghats and the Eastern Ghats. They are lower than the Himalayan towns but reliably cool, and most are surrounded by tea, coffee, cardamom and forest. The Nilgiris and Kodaikanal in Tamil Nadu, Munnar and Wayanad in Kerala, and Coorg and Chikmagalur in Karnataka are the best known.
Unlike the Himalaya, most southern hills are pleasant from October to May, and some are very beautiful in the monsoon, though wet.

How the southern hill stations grew
Ooty (Udhagamandalam) became the summer headquarters of the Madras Presidency in the 19th century, and Kodaikanal was founded by American missionaries in the 1840s as a retreat from the heat of the plains. Munnar grew around tea estates planted from the late 19th century, while Coorg's coffee economy goes back even earlier. The Toda, Kota and Badaga communities of the Nilgiris, and the Kodavas of Coorg, have lived in these hills far longer, and their cultures remain part of the region.
Where to stay
The southern hills are known for plantation stays: tea bungalows around Munnar, Coonoor and Valparai, and coffee estate homestays in Coorg, Chikmagalur and Sakleshpur. Town centres such as Ooty, Kodaikanal and Munnar have more choice but more traffic; a stay a few kilometres out is often quieter. Book well ahead for April, May and the Christmas holidays.
When to go
- October to February: cool, dry and clear; the best months for most hills.
- March to May: warm in the plains, so the hills are busiest; book early.
- June to September: the south-west monsoon brings heavy rain to Kerala and Karnataka hills; lush but wet, with occasional landslides.
Safety
- Mountain roads close or slow down after heavy rain, snow or landslides; check road and weather updates, and avoid driving after dark.
- Vehicles registered outside the Nilgiris and Dindigul districts need a free e-pass for Ooty and Kodaikanal; check the Tamil Nadu e-pass portal.
- Carry warm layers even in summer; nights in the hills are cool.
- Watch for wildlife on forest roads at dusk and do not stop to feed animals.
What to pack
- Light warm layer or fleece
- Rain jacket in the monsoon
- Leech socks for monsoon forest walks
- Comfortable walking shoes
