Karnataka's hills are coffee country: misty estates, homestays, waterfalls and some of the Western Ghats' best short treks.

4 min read · Updated September 2026

Karnataka's hill country lies in the Western Ghats, and it is best known for coffee. Coorg (Kodagu) and Chikmagalur are the main destinations, with estate homestays, waterfalls and viewpoints. Sakleshpur, Kudremukh and Agumbe offer rainforest, grasslands and quieter stays, while Nandi Hills near Bengaluru and the BR Hills near Mysuru make short trips.

Rather than a single hill town, most of these are districts of estates and villages, so where you stay shapes the trip.

Coffee country

Local tradition credits the Sufi saint Baba Budan with bringing coffee seeds to the hills near Chikmagalur in the 17th century, and the range there still carries his name. Today Coorg and Chikmagalur produce much of India's coffee, and many estates welcome guests for plantation walks, especially around the blossom (February to March) and harvest (roughly November to February) seasons.

Where to stay

Estate homestays are the signature stay in Coorg, Chikmagalur and Sakleshpur, often with home-cooked Kodava or Malnad food. Madikeri and Chikmagalur towns have hotels for shorter trips. Book ahead for long weekends, when Bengaluru visitors fill the hills.

A little history

Kodagu was a separate kingdom under the Haleri rulers until 1834, and later a small state that merged into Mysore State in 1956; the Kodava community's customs, food and dress remain distinctive. Coffee spread through the region under British planters in the 19th century. The Tibetan settlement at Bylakuppe, near Kushalnagar, dates from the 1960s and is home to the Namdroling monastery, often called the Golden Temple.

Good combinations

  • Coorg with Mysuru and Nagarhole (five to six days).
  • Chikmagalur with Belur and Halebidu's Hoysala temples.
  • Sakleshpur with Chikmagalur on a coffee-country loop.
  • Coorg with Wayanad across the Kerala border.
