Rajasthan's distances are large but its highways are mostly good, which makes it one of India's easiest states to explore by car. The classic circuit starts in Delhi, heads to Jaipur, swings west through Pushkar and Jodhpur to Jaisalmer in the Thar, and returns east to Udaipur via the Aravalli forts at Ranakpur and Kumbhalgarh. From Udaipur, you can drive back to Delhi or continue to Gujarat.
This page focuses on the route: legs, drive times and where to break the journey. Our Heritage cluster covers the forts and palaces in depth.
Quick answer
The classic Rajasthan road trip runs Delhi–Jaipur–Pushkar–Jodhpur–Jaisalmer–Jodhpur–Udaipur, about 1,500 to 1,800 km in total, over 8 to 12 days. Typical legs are Delhi to Jaipur (about 280 km), Jaipur to Jodhpur (about 340 km), Jodhpur to Jaisalmer (about 280 km) and Jodhpur to Udaipur via Ranakpur (about 260 km). October to March is best; summer is very hot.
Key takeaways
- Plan for 250 to 350 km a day on most legs; allow time for city traffic.
- The Delhi–Mumbai Expressway and its Jaipur link have shortened the Delhi–Jaipur leg.
- Jaisalmer is a dead end; you return via Jodhpur or Pokhran, or drive north to Bikaner.
- Ranakpur and Kumbhalgarh break the Jodhpur–Udaipur drive beautifully.
- Winter mornings can be foggy on the plains near Delhi and Jaipur.

Driving considerations
- Highways are mostly good, but expect cattle, tractors and camel carts on smaller roads.
- Avoid driving after dark on rural roads; animals and unlit vehicles are common.
- Carry water and keep the fuel tank above half in the desert west of Jodhpur.
- City centres in Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur have narrow lanes; park at the hotel and use autos.
- Fog can delay early starts near Delhi and Jaipur in December and January.
Self-drive or car with a driver
Many visitors to Rajasthan hire a car with a driver for the whole circuit, which removes the stress of city traffic and parking in old towns, and lets you enjoy the long desert legs. Self-drive works well if you are used to Indian highways; rental cars from Delhi or Jaipur can usually cross into neighbouring states, but check the rental terms.
Either way, keep driving days to a comfortable length. The circuit is at its best when you stop for a stepwell, a village crafts centre or a dhaba lunch rather than racing from one fort city to the next.
Food along the way
Highway dhabas serve dal-baati, kachoris and Rajasthani thalis; Jodhpur is known for mirchi vadas, Jaisalmer for desert cooking, and Pushkar for vegetarian cafés. Our food road trips guide has more ideas.
When to go
October to March is the best season, with warm days and cool nights; December and January can be cold in the desert. Summer (April to June) is very hot, with temperatures often above 40°C. The monsoon brings some rain to the south and east, and turns the Aravallis around Udaipur green.
Safety
- Mountain roads close or slow down after heavy rain, snow or landslides; check road status and weather updates each morning and avoid driving after dark.
- Permits, tolls, entry fees, pass openings and road works change; check official sources shortly before you travel.
- Distances and driving times are approximate and vary with traffic, weather, road works and stops.
What to pack
- Driving licence, RC, insurance and PUC certificate
- Sun hat, sunscreen and sunglasses
- A warm layer for desert nights in winter
- Water and snacks for long legs
