Road Trips for Couples in India: Scenic Routes and Slow Stays

For couples, a road trip is about the in-between: the viewpoints, the long lunches and the stays you would never find from a train.

4 min read · Updated September 2026

A road trip gives a couple something a flight-and-hotel holiday cannot: control over the pace, the freedom to stop wherever the view is good, and a series of places rather than one. The best couples' road trips mix a few hours of driving with long, unhurried stays in beautiful places.

This guide groups routes by mood: coast, hills, desert and adventure.

Quick answer

The best road trips for couples in India include the Konkan coast from Mumbai to Goa, the East Coast Road to Pondicherry, Kochi to Munnar and Thekkady, Bengaluru to Coorg, Udaipur and Mount Abu in Rajasthan, Kumaon's ridge road to Kausani and Munsiyari, the Tirthan valley in Himachal, and, for adventurous couples, Spiti or Ladakh in summer. October to March suits most; the Himalaya is best from May to October.

Key takeaways

  • Choose two or three bases rather than moving every day.
  • Coastal and hill routes suit most couples; Spiti and Ladakh suit adventurous ones.
  • Book one special stay, such as a heritage hotel or a plantation bungalow.
  • Avoid long weekends in popular places.
  • Leave space for unplanned stops; they often become the highlights.

Tips for couples

  • Plan no more than four to five hours of driving on most days.
  • Share the driving, or hire a driver for demanding stretches.
  • Book stays with character: heritage hotels, plantation bungalows, homestays.
  • Keep one day with no plans in a week-long trip.

Stays worth the drive

Much of the pleasure of a couples' road trip comes from where you stop. Rajasthan has fort and palace hotels in small towns such as Kumbhalgarh, Bundi and Rohet, often cheaper than the big cities. Coorg, Chikmagalur and Munnar have plantation bungalows where you wake among coffee or tea. The Konkan and Kerala coasts have small beach homestays, and the Himalaya has riverside cottages in Tirthan and village homestays in Spiti and Kumaon.

Timing a honeymoon road trip

  • Wedding season (November to February) is also the best season for Rajasthan, the coasts and the south.
  • For a Himalayan honeymoon by road, May, June, September and October balance open roads with fewer crowds.
  • Avoid the peak monsoon for hill routes, and cyclone warnings on the east coast.
  • Build in a lazy first day after the wedding; long drives right away are tiring.

Experiences along the way

  • Sunrise at Kumbhalgarh's walls or Kausani's viewpoint.
  • A shikara-style country-boat ride on Kerala's backwaters.
  • Fresh Malvani seafood in a Konkan village.
  • A spice-garden walk in Thekkady or a coffee-estate tour in Coorg.
  • A slow evening walk along Pondicherry's promenade.
  • Stargazing on a clear night in Spiti or Ladakh.
  • A picnic by Pangong or Chandratal on a calm summer afternoon.

When to go

October to March suits the coasts, Rajasthan and the south. The Himalaya is best from May to October, with high passes open from June. The monsoon makes the Western Ghats and Kerala romantic but slow and wet.

Safety

  • Mountain roads close or slow down after heavy rain, snow or landslides; check road status and weather updates each morning and avoid driving after dark.
  • Permits, tolls, entry fees, pass openings and road works change; check official sources shortly before you travel.
  • Distances and driving times are approximate and vary with traffic, weather, road works and stops.

What to pack

  • Driving licence, RC, insurance and PUC certificate, with copies
  • Warm layers and a rain jacket
  • Motion-sickness tablets for winding roads
  • Cash for small towns and barriers
