Kochi to Munnar Road Trip: Route, Waterfalls and Stops

The drive from Kochi to Munnar climbs from the coastal plain through rubber and spice country to the tea estates of the High Ranges.

4 min read · Updated September 2026

The usual route from Kochi to Munnar follows NH85 east through Muvattupuzha and Kothamangalam, crosses the Periyar at Neriamangalam, and climbs through forest past the Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls to Adimali, then on to Munnar through spice gardens and, finally, tea estates. It is only about 130 km, but the hill section is winding and busy, so most drives take four to five hours.

The road has been under widening works in recent years, and the monsoon brings landslide risks on the ghat section.

Quick answer

Kochi to Munnar is about 130 km via NH85 through Kothamangalam, Neriamangalam and Adimali, and usually takes 4 to 5 hours. The Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls are right beside the road and are fullest from June to October. Thattekad bird sanctuary is a short detour near Kothamangalam. October to March is best for clear views; in the monsoon, follow district alerts for landslides.

Key takeaways

  • Allow four to five hours for about 130 km; the ghat section is slow.
  • Cheeyappara and Valara falls are on the road itself, so you do not need a detour.
  • Thattekad bird sanctuary is a short detour near Kothamangalam.
  • Widening works may slow some stretches; check before travelling.
  • Fog is common on the upper section in the mornings and evenings.

Alternative routes

A quieter route via Kothamangalam, Bhoothathankettu and the Idamalayar side is used by some drivers, and a southern route via Thodupuzha links with Vagamon. From Munnar, the road east to Bodimettu and the Tamil Nadu border has fine views; the road south via Poopara and Kumily reaches Thekkady in three to four hours.

Driving considerations

  • Leave Kochi early to clear city traffic before the ghat section.
  • Buses and trucks are frequent on NH85; overtake only with a clear view.
  • Parking near Cheeyappara falls fills up in the monsoon; stop briefly and move on.
  • Munnar town is congested; many hotels are a few kilometres outside it.

Short plans

2Drive up with waterfall stops; tea museum and Mattupetty; Eravikulam and drive back
3Add Top Station or the Bodimettu viewpoints
5Continue to Thekkady and down to the backwaters

Food and breaks

Kothamangalam and Adimali have plenty of simple restaurants serving Kerala meals, parotta and beef or vegetable curries, and there are tea stalls with viewpoints on the climb above Adimali. Spice shops along the road sell cardamom, pepper and home-made chocolate; prices vary, so compare before buying.

Where to stay near the route

Most people stay in or around Munnar, but Adimali and the Pallivasal and Chithirapuram areas below the town are quieter and often better value, with views over the valleys.

When to go

October to March is best for clear views and comfortable driving. The monsoon (June to September) fills the waterfalls and turns the hills green, but brings landslides and fog; follow district alerts, and avoid the ghat section on red-alert days. April and May are busy with holiday traffic.

Safety

  • On ghat roads, use low gears downhill, give way to uphill traffic where the road is narrow, and do not overtake on blind bends.
  • Mountain roads close or slow down after heavy rain, snow or landslides; check road status and weather updates each morning and avoid driving after dark.
  • Permits, tolls, entry fees, pass openings and road works change; check official sources shortly before you travel.
  • Distances and driving times are approximate and vary with traffic, weather, road works and stops.

What to pack

  • Driving licence, RC, insurance and PUC certificate, with copies
  • Warm layers and a rain jacket
  • Motion-sickness tablets for winding roads
  • Cash for small towns and barriers
