Kerala Nature Itinerary: Hills, Forests, Waterfalls and Backwaters

In a week, Kerala takes you from waterfalls to tea hills, forest lakes and palm-lined backwaters.

4 min read · Updated September 2026

This loop starts and ends in Kochi, which has an international airport and good rail links. It climbs from the plains to the Western Ghats and back down to the backwaters, with no drive longer than about five hours.

It suits families and first-time visitors, with short walks, boat rides and comfortable stays throughout.

Quick answer

A good seven-day Kerala nature itinerary runs Kochi to Athirappilly Falls (day 1), on to Munnar (day 2), a full day in Munnar with Eravikulam and tea country (day 3), Munnar to Thekkady (day 4), Periyar lake and forest walks (day 5), Thekkady to the Kumarakom backwaters (day 6), and back to Kochi (day 7). October to March is best; the falls are fullest in the monsoon.

Key takeaways

  • Kochi is the natural start and end point.
  • Book the Periyar lake boat and Eravikulam entry early in peak season.
  • Eravikulam closes for a few weeks early in the year for Nilgiri tahr calving.
  • A one-night houseboat or a lakeside stay both work for the backwaters.
  • Allow extra time for hill roads in the monsoon.

Getting around

Hire a car with a driver from Kochi for the whole loop; hill roads to Munnar and Thekkady are narrow and winding, and drivers know where to stop for viewpoints and tea. KSRTC buses link all the stops if you are on a budget, but they add time. Book the Eravikulam entry and the Periyar lake boat online where possible, especially on weekends and in the Christmas holidays.

If you have only five days, drop Athirappilly and drive straight from Kochi to Munnar, then continue to Thekkady and Kumarakom. With ten days, add Wayanad in the north or Vagamon and Munroe Island in the south.

When to go

October to March is best for clear views and comfortable walks. From June to September the waterfalls are at their fullest and the hills very green, but roads can slip and some viewpoints close. April and May are hot on the coast but pleasant in Munnar.

Safety

  • Stay on marked trails and viewpoints, and heed local closures after heavy rain.
  • Permits, entry rules, seasonal closures and timings change; check official sources before you go.
  • Carry your waste back, avoid loud music and never feed wildlife.
  • Drive times are approximate and depend on traffic, weather and road works.
  • Do not swim near waterfalls or in rivers; currents are strong.

What to pack

  • Light cotton clothes and a warm layer for Munnar
  • Rain jacket
  • Walking shoes
  • Insect repellent
