Western Ghats Nature Itinerary: Coorg, Chikmagalur, Jog Falls and Dandeli

This road trip follows the Western Ghats north through Karnataka, from coffee country to rainforest, waterfall and river.

4 min read · Updated September 2026

Karnataka's stretch of the Western Ghats, known as the Malnad, is one of the greenest regions of India. This one-way route from Bengaluru heads west to Coorg and then north along the Ghats, ending at Hubballi, with the option to continue to Goa.

It is best done by hired car with a driver, since public transport between these places is slow.

Quick answer

A good eight-day Western Ghats nature itinerary in Karnataka runs Bengaluru to Coorg (day 1), Coorg's falls and estates (day 2), Coorg to Chikmagalur (day 3), Mullayanagiri and Kemmangundi (day 4), Chikmagalur to Sagara via Kudremukh and Agumbe (day 5), Jog Falls (day 6), on to Dandeli (day 7), and out via Hubballi (day 8). September to February is best; Jog is fullest in the monsoon.

Key takeaways

  • Travel by hired car; drives are four to six hours between bases.
  • Jog Falls is fullest from July to October and can be thin in summer.
  • Kudremukh and many Ghats treks need forest department bookings; check the current rules.
  • Dandeli's river activities depend on water levels and operator permissions.
  • Leeches are common in the monsoon; carry leech socks.

Days 1 and 2: Coorg

Days 3 and 4: Chikmagalur

Day 5: Kudremukh and Agumbe

This is the most scenic drive of the trip, five to six hours through Kudremukh National Park and down to Agumbe's rainforest, then on to Sagara near Jog. Stop at Agumbe's sunset point if the timing works. Treks in Kudremukh need a forest department booking in advance.

Day 6: Jog Falls

Spend the morning at the Jog viewpoints, where the Sharavathi drops into its gorge. In the monsoon, mist can hide the falls for hours, so be patient. Explore the Sharavathi valley and backwaters of the Linganamakki reservoir in the afternoon.

Days 7 and 8: Dandeli

Drive about four to five hours north to Dandeli on the Kali river, surrounded by forest. Operators run coracle rides, kayaking and rafting when water levels allow. On the last day, drive about two hours to Hubballi for flights or trains, or continue to Goa.

Variations

  • Shorter: do Coorg and Chikmagalur only as a five-day loop from Bengaluru.
  • Add Sakleshpur between Coorg and Chikmagalur.
  • End in Goa for Dudhsagar Falls and Mollem.

When to go

September to February is the best period, with green hills, flowing waterfalls and walkable trails. The monsoon (June to September) is the time for Jog and the most dramatic scenery, but rain is heavy and some roads and trails close. March to May is warm but still pleasant in the higher hills.

Safety

  • Stay on marked trails and viewpoints, and heed local closures after heavy rain.
  • Permits, entry rules, seasonal closures and timings change; check official sources before you go.
  • Carry your waste back, avoid loud music and never feed wildlife.
  • Drive times are approximate and depend on traffic, weather and road works.
  • Swimming in rivers and at waterfalls is dangerous; follow local bans.

What to pack

  • Rain jacket and leech socks in the monsoon
  • Walking shoes with grip
  • Light layers
  • Binoculars
