Udupi, on the coast of Karnataka about 60 km north of Mangaluru, grew around the Sri Krishna Matha, founded in the 13th century by the philosopher Madhvacharya. Eight mathas (monasteries) take turns to manage worship at the temple, and the town remains an important pilgrimage centre.
Udupi also gave India a style of vegetarian cooking and the Udupi restaurant, found from Mumbai to Delhi. The things to do in Udupi include the temple and its Car Street, beaches at Malpe, Kaup and Delta, a boat trip to the unusual basalt rocks of St Mary's Island, and the university town of Manipal.
One to two days is enough. October to March is the best time; St Mary's Island boats run only in the dry season.
For how to get there, when to go and where to stay, see our Udupi travel guide.
