Kedarnath and Badrinath Yatra (Do Dham): Route and Itinerary

For travellers short on time, the two best-known Himalayan shrines make a week-long yatra of their own.

4 min read · Updated September 2026

Kedarnath, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, and Badrinath, one of the four dhams of India, are the two most visited shrines in Uttarakhand. Many pilgrims visit just these two, a trip often called the Do Dham Yatra, in six or seven days from Haridwar or Rishikesh.

The same rules apply as for the full Char Dham: mandatory registration, a short summer and autumn season, altitude and mountain roads that can close in bad weather.

Quick answer

A Kedarnath and Badrinath yatra takes about six to seven days from Haridwar or Rishikesh. Drive to Guptkashi or Sonprayag, trek about 16 km from Gaurikund to Kedarnath (or fly by helicopter from Phata, Sersi or Guptkashi), then continue to Badrinath via Chamoli and Joshimath. Registration on the Uttarakhand portal is mandatory. May to June and September to October are the best windows.

Key takeaways

  • Six to seven days from Haridwar or Rishikesh is comfortable.
  • Kedarnath needs a 16 km trek from Gaurikund, or a helicopter booked only on IRCTC HeliYatra.
  • Staying a night at Kedarnath reduces rush and helps with the altitude.
  • Badrinath is reached by road; Mana village is 3 km beyond.
  • Registration on the Uttarakhand government portal is mandatory.

Mana

A village 3 km beyond Badrinath near the Tibet border, with Vyas Gufa, Bhim Pul and the start of the trail to Vasudhara falls.

On the way

  • Devprayag: the confluence of the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda, where the Ganga takes its name.
  • Rudraprayag: the confluence of the Alaknanda and Mandakini.
  • Ukhimath: the winter seat of Kedarnath's deity.
  • Chopta and Tungnath: a detour for the highest Shiva temple, on a short trek.
  • Joshimath: gateway to Auli and the winter seat of Badrinath's deity.

Where to stay

  • Guptkashi, Phata and Sitapur: the usual bases for Kedarnath, with hotels and GMVN rest houses.
  • Kedarnath: GMVN huts, tents and dharamshalas near the temple; book early.
  • Badrinath: hotels, dharamshalas and GMVN properties close to the temple.
  • Pipalkoti and Joshimath: quieter stops on the way back.

In May and June, book rooms along the whole route before you set off.

When to go

  • May and June: busiest; book stays and helicopters early.
  • July and August: monsoon landslides; avoid if possible.
  • September and October: clearer and quieter; cold nights.

Safety

  • The shrines are at 3,000 m or more; climb gradually, drink water, and descend if you have signs of altitude sickness. Take medical advice before the trip, especially if you are older or have heart or lung conditions.
  • Check road and weather advisories each morning during the yatra.
  • Darshan waits vary from minutes to many hours; no one can guarantee quick darshan, so plan buffer time.
  • Start the Kedarnath trek early to finish before afternoon weather.

What to pack

  • Warm jacket, gloves and cap
  • Rain jacket
  • Walking shoes with grip
  • Torch and power bank
  • Registration printout and ID
