Hemkund Sahib Yatra: Trek Route, Dates and Registration

Hemkund Sahib is a gurdwara beside a glacial lake at over 4,500 m, reached on a steep summer trek through the Bhyundar valley.

4 min read · Updated September 2026

Gurdwara Sri Hemkund Sahib stands beside Hemkund lake in the Garhwal Himalaya, at an altitude of over 4,500 m. Sikh tradition, based on the Bachittar Natak, identifies it with the place where Guru Gobind Singh meditated in a previous life. A small Lakshman temple stands by the same lake.

The gurdwara is open only in summer, after the snow on the path is cleared. Pilgrims trek up from Govindghat via the base camp of Ghangaria, which is also the starting point for the Valley of Flowers.

Quick answer

Hemkund Sahib is open from late May to early October (23 May to 10 October announced for 2026). Registration on the Uttarakhand portal is mandatory. From Govindghat, pilgrims go to Pulna by road, trek about 10 km to Ghangaria, then climb about 6 km steeply to Hemkund and return to Ghangaria the same day. Helicopters fly between Govindghat and Ghangaria in good weather.

At Hemkund

The gurdwara serves hot tea and langar to pilgrims. Many pilgrims take a dip in the icy lake before prayers. The weather changes quickly at this altitude, so most people spend an hour or two before starting down in the early afternoon.

Ghangaria base camp

Ghangaria is a small seasonal settlement at the meeting of the paths to Hemkund Sahib and the Valley of Flowers. It has a large gurdwara that offers shelter and langar, plus hotels and guesthouses that open only for the season. Rooms are basic and fill quickly in June; book ahead and carry cash, as ATMs and card payments are unreliable.

How fit do you need to be?

  • The final 6 km climb gains over 1,000 m of height and is steep; most walkers take three to five hours up.
  • Ponies are available on the main path, and porters carry bags; agree prices at the official counters.
  • Practise walking uphill for a few weeks before the trip.
  • Older pilgrims and anyone with heart or lung conditions should take medical advice first.

Safety

  • The climb to Hemkund reaches over 4,500 m; ascend slowly, and turn back if you have symptoms of altitude sickness. Take medical advice before the trip.
  • Early-season snow and summer rain make the path slippery.
  • Start the final climb early and descend by early afternoon.
  • Monsoon landslides can close the road to Govindghat; keep buffer days.

What to pack

  • Warm jacket, gloves and cap
  • Rain jacket and poncho
  • Good trekking shoes with grip
  • Head covering
  • Torch, power bank and personal medicines
  • Cash for Ghangaria
