A Takht, meaning throne, is a seat of temporal authority in Sikhism. There are five: the Akal Takht in Amritsar, Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib at Anandpur Sahib, Takht Sri Damdama Sahib at Talwandi Sabo near Bathinda, Takht Sri Patna Sahib in Bihar, and Takht Sri Hazur Sahib at Nanded in Maharashtra.

Three are in Punjab and can be visited in a few days by road. Patna and Nanded are far away, linked with the birth and the last days of Guru Gobind Singh, and are usually reached by train or flight.

Quick answer

Visiting all five takes about eight to ten days: three to four days by road for the Punjab Takhts, then trains or flights to Patna and Nanded. The Sachkhand Express links Amritsar and Nanded directly.

The first Takht, the Akal Takht, was established in Amritsar by Guru Hargobind, the sixth Guru, as a seat of temporal authority facing the Harmandir Sahib. Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib at Anandpur Sahib marks the place where Guru Gobind Singh founded the Khalsa on Vaisakhi in 1699.

Takht Sri Patna Sahib and Takht Sri Hazur Sahib are linked with the beginning and end of Guru Gobind Singh's life, and Takht Sri Damdama Sahib at Talwandi Sabo with his stay in the Malwa region. The Takhts are administered by Sikh bodies, and their notices set the rules for visitors.
