Visakhapatnam, or Vizag, is Andhra Pradesh's largest city and the headquarters of the Indian Navy's Eastern Naval Command. It lies in a bay framed by hills of the Eastern Ghats, with a long coastline of beaches to the north and a busy port to the south.
The things to do in Vizag include walking the beach road, touring a decommissioned submarine and a naval aircraft, riding the ropeway up Kailasagiri, swimming and surfing at Rushikonda, visiting the Simhachalam Temple and exploring 2,000-year-old Buddhist monasteries on the hills. It is also the starting point for the scenic train journey to Araku Valley.
Two days covers the city; add two for Araku. October to March is the best time.
For how to get there, when to go and where to stay, see our Visakhapatnam travel guide.
