Mussoorie, at around 2,000 metres on a ridge above Dehradun, became a British summer retreat in the 1820s and is often called the Queen of the Hills. On clear days it looks north to the snow peaks of the Garhwal Himalaya and south over the Doon Valley.
The town has two quite different moods. The Mall Road and its surroundings are lively, with shops, cafés, ropeway rides and crowds. Landour, the old cantonment above it, is quiet, with pine and deodar forest, colonial cottages, bakeries and walking loops. Most visitors do a bit of both.
Two days covers the main sights; three lets you slow down in Landour or add a day trip to Dhanaulti. Dehradun, with the nearest airport and railway station, is about an hour away.

See the Winterline from the ridge

Camel's Back Road, Lal Tibba and George Everest's House are good places to watch for it.
It is not visible every evening; clear, cold days after a spell of dry weather give the best chance.
