Wildlife Safari Packing List and What to Wear

Open jeeps are cold at dawn in winter and hot by noon in summer. Here is what to pack so you can enjoy every drive.

4 min read · Updated September 2026

Safari jeeps in India are open to the air. At dawn in December or January the temperature in central and north India can be close to freezing, while a May afternoon drive can be over 40°C. The right clothes make a bigger difference to comfort than anything else.

Colours matter too. Muted greens, browns, khaki and beige blend with the forest; bright colours and white stand out, and some parks discourage them.

Quick answer

For a wildlife safari in India, pack clothes in neutral colours such as khaki, olive, beige and brown, with layers you can remove as the day warms: a warm jacket, cap and gloves for winter mornings, and a hat, sunscreen and a light scarf for summer dust. Carry binoculars, a camera with a zoom lens, water, the ID used for booking, and insect repellent.

Key takeaways

  • Wear neutral colours; avoid bright colours, white and camouflage patterns.
  • Layer up: winter dawn drives in open jeeps are very cold.
  • A scarf or buff protects against dust on dry-season drives.
  • Binoculars are the most useful item after your ID.
  • Carry the same ID you used to book; it is checked at the gate.

Gear

Binoculars

8x42 or 10x42 binoculars suit most safaris and birding. One pair per person saves passing them around.

Camera

A zoom lens of 100 to 400 mm or more, spare batteries and cards. A beanbag helps steady the lens on the jeep.
