Bengaluru to Ooty Road Trip: Via Mysuru, Bandipur and Mudumalai

The road to Ooty crosses two tiger reserves before climbing into the Nilgiris, so timing matters as much as distance.

4 min read · Updated September 2026

From Bengaluru, the road to Ooty runs down the Mysuru expressway, then south through Nanjangud and Gundlupet into Bandipur Tiger Reserve in Karnataka and Mudumalai in Tamil Nadu. After Theppakadu, the main route climbs via Gudalur and Naduvattam to Ooty. A shorter but much steeper alternative from Masinagudi climbs the Kalhatti ghat with 36 hairpin bends.

The forest stretch is closed to most vehicles at night, so plan to cross it in daylight.

Quick answer

Bengaluru to Ooty is about 270 km and usually takes 7 to 8 hours via Mysuru, Gundlupet, Bandipur, Mudumalai and Gudalur. The forest road through Bandipur and Mudumalai is closed to cars at night (roughly 9 pm to 6 am, earlier for two-wheelers), so time your drive. Vehicles from outside the Nilgiris need an e-pass. The Kalhatti ghat via Masinagudi is shorter but very steep.

Key takeaways

  • Cross Bandipur and Mudumalai in daylight; the forest stretch closes at night.
  • Two-wheelers face an earlier closure on the Bandipur stretch.
  • Register for the Nilgiris e-pass before you travel; check the current rules.
  • The Gudalur route is gentler; Kalhatti is steep and has vehicle restrictions at times.
  • Wildlife is often seen from the road; do not stop or step out.

The forest night ban

Since 2010, the highway through Bandipur (and the adjoining Mudumalai stretch) has been closed to most traffic at night to reduce wildlife deaths. Cars usually cannot enter between about 9 pm and 6 am, and the Bandipur stretch closes earlier for two-wheelers. Timings can change, so check before you set out, and allow buffer time for queues at the checkposts.

Gudalur or Kalhatti?

The Gudalur route is longer but gentler and better for most cars and drivers. The Kalhatti ghat from Masinagudi is shorter but has 36 steep hairpin bends; heavy vehicles and sometimes outside vehicles face restrictions on the downhill direction, so check the current rules and use low gears throughout.

The Nilgiris e-pass

Vehicles registered outside the Nilgiris district need an e-pass to enter, a rule introduced in 2024 and revised several times since. Apply online before you travel and keep a copy for checkposts.

When to go

October to June suits most travellers; April and May are the busiest months in Ooty. The monsoon brings mist and rain to the Gudalur side. Winter nights in Ooty are cold, with frost in December and January.

Safety

  • On forest roads through tiger reserves, keep to the speed limit, do not stop or get out of the car, and never feed animals.
  • On ghat roads, use low gears downhill, give way to uphill traffic where the road is narrow, and do not overtake on blind bends.
  • Mountain roads close or slow down after heavy rain, snow or landslides; check road status and weather updates each morning and avoid driving after dark.
  • Permits, tolls, entry fees, pass openings and road works change; check official sources shortly before you travel.
  • Distances and driving times are approximate and vary with traffic, weather, road works and stops.

What to pack

  • Driving licence, RC, insurance and PUC certificate, with copies
  • Warm layers and a rain jacket
  • Motion-sickness tablets for winding roads
  • Cash for small towns and barriers
