Agartala, the capital of Tripura, lies on the Haora river just a few kilometres from the Bangladesh border. It was the capital of the Manikya kings, one of the oldest ruling dynasties in India, who built palaces and temples here and across the state. Rabindranath Tagore had close ties with the royal family.
The things to do in Agartala include the white Ujjayanta Palace and its museum, temples old and new, parks and the flag-lowering ceremony at the Akhaura border. Day trips lead to Neermahal, a palace in a lake; the Tripura Sundari Temple at Udaipur; Sepahijala's wildlife; and the remarkable rock carvings of Unakoti.
Two days covers the city; three to four with day trips. October to March is the best time.
For how to get there, when to go and where to stay, see our Agartala travel guide.
