Kalimpong, at about 1,250 metres, sits on a ridge above the Teesta river in the north of West Bengal. Until the mid-20th century it was an important market on the trade route between India and Tibet via the Jelep La pass, and its bazaars were full of wool, mules and traders. Scottish missionaries built schools and churches here, and Tibetan and Bhutanese influences remain strong.
Things to do in Kalimpong are relaxed: monasteries with valley views, Deolo Hill, nurseries of orchids and cacti, heritage buildings from the mission era, and the local haat bazaar. It is lower, warmer and quieter than Darjeeling, and a good base for the forest villages of Lava and Lolegaon.
Two days covers the town; add a day for Lava, Lolegaon or Rishyap.
For how to get there, when to go and where to stay, see our Kalimpong travel guide.
