Darjeeling, at about 2,050 metres in the north of West Bengal, was developed by the British from the 1830s as a sanatorium and summer retreat. Tea planting followed, and today the name Darjeeling is known worldwide for its fine tea. On clear days, the town faces Kanchenjunga, at 8,586 metres the third-highest mountain on earth.
The best things to do in Darjeeling include the pre-dawn trip to Tiger Hill for sunrise on Kanchenjunga, a ride on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a tea estate visit with a tasting, monasteries at Ghoom and around town, the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and the zoo with its red pandas, and evenings on the Mall and Chowrasta.
Three days covers the essentials. March to May and October to December give the best chance of clear mountain views.
For how to get there, when to go and where to stay, see our Darjeeling travel guide.

Sunrise and the toy train
Watch sunrise from Tiger Hill
Tiger Hill, about 11 km from Darjeeling, is the classic viewpoint for sunrise over Kanchenjunga and the eastern Himalaya. On clear mornings, the snow peaks turn pink and gold, and Everest may be visible in the distance. Jeeps leave town around 4 a.m. It gets very crowded in season; a viewing gallery charges a fee.
Views depend entirely on the weather. If the morning is cloudy, try again the next day.

Buy tea properly
Darjeeling tea is graded by flush (first flush in spring, second flush in early summer, autumnal) and by leaf grade. Buy from estate outlets or established tea shops, where you can taste before buying. Look for the Darjeeling logo, which marks tea grown in the region under its Geographical Indication.
