Kochi (Cochin) has been a major port on the spice route since the 14th century, when floods opened its natural harbour. Arab, Chinese, Jewish, Portuguese, Dutch and British traders all left their mark. Vasco da Gama died here in 1524, and India's oldest European church and one of its oldest active synagogues stand within a short walk of each other.
The best things to do in Kochi are in Fort Kochi and Mattancherry, on the peninsula: the Chinese fishing nets, colonial churches and cemeteries, the Dutch Palace, the Paradesi Synagogue, spice warehouses and antique shops, plus evenings of Kathakali. The mainland city, Ernakulam, has markets, malls and a waterfront, and ferries and the new Water Metro link the islands.
Two to three days is ideal. October to March is the most comfortable time.
