Kumarakom, about 15 km from Kottayam, is a group of low islands and canals on the eastern shore of Vembanad Lake. It is quieter and more upmarket than Alappuzha, with lakeside resorts, Ayurveda and village stays, and it is where Kerala's Responsible Tourism programme first connected visitors with local farmers, fishermen and craftspeople.
The things to do in Kumarakom include birdwatching at the sanctuary, cruises and houseboat nights on Vembanad Lake, boat trips to Pathiramanal island, canoe rides through village canals, experiences of toddy tapping, coir making and fishing, and a quirky driftwood museum.
One or two nights is typical. October to March is the best time; migratory birds arrive in winter, while many resident birds nest in the monsoon.
For how to get there, when to go and where to stay, see our Kumarakom travel guide.
