Thekkady, in Idukki district near the Tamil Nadu border, is the base for visiting Periyar Tiger Reserve, one of India's best-known protected areas. The lake at its heart was formed in 1895 by the Mullaperiyar Dam, and the drowned trees still stand in the water. The neighbouring town of Kumily is where most hotels, spice shops and restaurants are.
The things to do in Thekkady centre on Periyar: a boat safari on the lake, and eco-tourism activities such as nature walks, bamboo rafting and border hikes led by trained local guides, many of them from forest-dependent communities. Outside the park are spice plantations, cultural shows, viewpoints over Tamil Nadu and the forest eco-tourism at Gavi.
One to two days is enough. October to April is the best time; sightings are often better in the drier months.
For how to get there, when to go and where to stay, see our Thekkady travel guide.
