Tawang, at about 3,000 metres in the far west of Arunachal Pradesh, borders Bhutan and Tibet. It is the homeland of the Monpa people, who follow Tibetan Buddhism, and its great monastery, founded in the 17th century, dominates the valley. The sixth Dalai Lama was born nearby, and the region saw heavy fighting in the 1962 war with China.
Things to do in Tawang include the monastery and nearby nunneries, war memorials, high-altitude lakes, the drive over Sela Pass and, with special permission, a visit to Bum La Pass on the border. The journey from Guwahati via Bhalukpong, Bomdila and Dirang is long but spectacular.
Allow three to four days in Tawang and two days each way for the road. An Inner Line Permit is required for Indian nationals and a Protected Area Permit for foreigners.
For how to get there, when to go and where to stay, see our Tawang travel guide.

Visit Gorsam Chorten at Zemithang
