Thanjavur, in the fertile Kaveri delta, was the capital of the Chola dynasty at its height. The Brihadeeswarar Temple, built by Rajaraja Chola I and completed in 1010, is one of the greatest achievements of Indian architecture. With the temples at Gangaikondacholapuram and Darasuram, it forms the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Great Living Chola Temples.
Later, Nayak and Maratha rulers made Thanjavur a centre of music, painting and learning. The things to do in Thanjavur include the Big Temple, the palace with its library and bronze gallery, and the city's crafts: Thanjavur paintings, bobble-headed dolls, veenas and art plates. The delta around it is full of temples.
One day covers Thanjavur; two or three days allow Kumbakonam, Darasuram and Gangaikondacholapuram. November to February is the most comfortable time.
For how to get there, when to go and where to stay, see our Thanjavur travel guide.
