Grishneshwar Temple, also spelt Ghrishneshwar or Grushneshwar, is in Verul village, about 1.5 km from the Ellora Caves and about 30 km from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (formerly Aurangabad). Tradition links it to Ghushma, a devotee whose faith was rewarded by Shiva, which gives the temple its name.

The present temple of red basalt was restored in the 18th century by Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore, who also rebuilt many other temples across India; an earlier restoration is credited to Maloji Bhosale, grandfather of Shivaji. It is one of the smaller Jyotirlinga temples, and queues are usually shorter than at the more famous shrines.

The legend of Ghushma

According to the Shiva Purana, Ghushma was a devout woman who made and worshipped clay lingas every day and immersed them in a nearby tank. When her son was killed out of jealousy, she continued her worship calmly, and Shiva restored the boy and remained here as Ghushmeshwar at her request. The story is told to pilgrims as a lesson in faith and forgiveness, and the tank near the temple is associated with it.
