Pench Tiger Reserve: Safari Gates, Zones, Best Time and Travel Guide

Pench's teak forests along the Pench river are among India's easiest tiger reserves to reach, a short drive from Nagpur. Here is how to plan a safari.

Pench Tiger Reserve covers the forests of the Pench river valley on the border of Madhya Pradesh (Seoni and Chhindwara districts) and Maharashtra (Nagpur district), where each state manages its own part. The landscape of teak and mixed forest, with the river and the Totladoh reservoir at its heart, is the country Rudyard Kipling drew on for The Jungle Book.

The reserve is known for tigers, leopards and wild dogs (dhole), large herds of chital and gaur, and rich birdlife. Its easy access from Nagpur makes it popular for a short safari break. The Madhya Pradesh side is the more visited; the Maharashtra side, through gates such as Sillari, is quieter.

Quick answer

Pench Tiger Reserve, on the Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra border, is reached from Nagpur, about two to three hours by road. On the Madhya Pradesh side, the core zones are entered through the Turia, Karmajhiri and Jamtara gates, with buffer gates such as Khawasa and Rukhad. Core zones open from 1 October to 30 June; buffers can run in the monsoon. Book on the official MP Online forest portal up to 120 days ahead.

How to plan a tiger safari

Tips for a better Pench safari

  • Book at least three drives; each one covers only part of one zone.
  • Mix core and buffer drives. Buffer zones are cheaper, less crowded and often productive.
  • Ask your lodge which zones have had recent activity, but treat it as a guide, not a promise.
  • Spend time on birds, dhole and smaller animals; the drive is worthwhile even without a tiger.
  • Carry a light jacket even in March; open jeeps are cold before sunrise.
  • Leave a rest day between drives if you are travelling with young children.

Best time to visit

MonthsConditions
October to FebruaryPleasant and green; cold mornings in December and January
March to JuneHot; forest thins and animals gather at water; good for sightings
July to SeptemberCore closed; some buffer safaris in the monsoon

Getting there and where to stay

  • Nagpur, with an airport and major railway station, is about two to three hours by road from Turia.
  • Seoni is the nearest town on the Madhya Pradesh side; Jabalpur is further north.
  • Most lodges and resorts cluster around Turia gate; some are near Karmajhiri and Khawasa.
  • Combine Pench with Kanha (about five hours by road) or Tadoba (about five to six hours).

A two-day Pench plan

1Arrive from Nagpur by midday; afternoon buffer or core safari from Turia
2Morning core safari; rest; afternoon safari from a different gate

  • Stay inside the vehicle and follow the guide's instructions.
  • Keep noise down and do not feed animals.
  • Carry the ID used for booking.
  • Drive carefully on the highway at night; wildlife crosses the roads near the reserve.
