Cherrapunji, known locally as Sohra, lies at about 1,480 metres on the southern edge of the Khasi Hills, around 55 km from Shillong. It has held world records for rainfall, and nearby Mawsynram is often called the wettest place on earth. All that rain pours off the plateau in spectacular waterfalls and has carved caves and gorges into the limestone.
The things to do in Cherrapunji are mostly natural wonders: Nohkalikai and Seven Sisters falls, caves such as Mawsmai and Arwah, viewpoints over Bangladesh, and the trek down to the living root bridges at Nongriat. It is also a quiet place to stay among the clouds.
Two days is ideal, with a night at Nongriat or near Sohra for the root bridge. October to April gives clearer views; the monsoon brings the biggest waterfalls but also heavy fog.
For how to get there, when to go and where to stay, see our Cherrapunji travel guide.

Staying in Sohra
Spend a night in the clouds
Sohra's resorts and homestays sit on the edge of the plateau, and waking up above a sea of clouds is one of the best experiences here. Evenings are quiet and cool; bring a warm layer even in summer.
Eat local food
Local eateries serve jadoh, pork dishes, dal and rice. Vegetarian choices are simpler; ask your stay to prepare meals in advance.
