Shillong, at about 1,500 metres, is the capital of Meghalaya and was the capital of undivided Assam under British rule. Its pine-covered hills, colonial architecture and cool climate earned it the name Scotland of the East. It is a lively, youthful city known across India for its rock and blues music, football and cafés.
Things to do in Shillong include Ward's Lake and Elephant Falls, the excellent Don Bosco Museum of Indigenous Cultures, viewpoints from Shillong Peak, markets at Police Bazar and Bara Bazar, and evenings of live music. Just outside the city are Umiam Lake, the Laitlum canyons and the sacred forest at Mawphlang.
Two days covers the city; most visitors stay longer and use it as a base for Sohra and Dawki. October to May is the most comfortable time.
