Nature Travel in Northeast India: Forests, Rivers, Caves and Valleys

Northeast India has some of the country's wettest, greenest and least-visited landscapes, cared for largely by local communities.

4 min read · Updated September 2026

The Northeast combines the eastern Himalaya, the plateau of Meghalaya, the Brahmaputra valley and the forested hills along the Myanmar border. It falls within the Himalaya and Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspots, and much of its forest is owned and managed by communities rather than the state.

That makes community-led travel, through village homestays and local guides, the natural way to experience it.

Quick answer

The best nature destinations in Northeast India include Meghalaya's waterfalls, caves and living root bridges around Sohra and Dawki; Ziro, Mechuka and Namdapha in Arunachal Pradesh; Majuli on the Brahmaputra in Assam; the Dzukou Valley in Nagaland; Loktak Lake and the Shirui hills in Manipur; Phawngpui and Vantawng in Mizoram; and Sikkim's lakes and rhododendron valleys. October to May is the best period; Indian visitors need Inner Line Permits for several states.

Key takeaways

  • Meghalaya is the easiest starting point, with no Inner Line Permit for Indian visitors.
  • Arunachal, Nagaland, Mizoram and Manipur require Inner Line Permits for Indian visitors.
  • Much forest land is community-owned; follow village rules and pay community fees.
  • October to May is best; the monsoon brings very heavy rain and landslides.
  • Distances are long and roads slow; plan fewer places with more time.

Community-led travel

Across the Northeast, villages and clans own much of the land, including forests, rivers and root bridges. Many charge small entry or guide fees and set rules on photography, plastics and behaviour. Khonoma in Nagaland is known for its community conservation, and Mawlynnong in Meghalaya for its village-led tourism. Staying in homestays and hiring local guides keeps the benefit in the community.

Food and culture

Nature trips here come with some of India's most distinctive food: smoked pork and bamboo shoot in Nagaland, jadoh in Meghalaya, eromba in Manipur, and Assamese thalis with fish and greens. Village homestays usually cook with local produce; tell hosts about dietary needs in advance.

Safety

  • Stay on marked trails and viewpoints, and heed local closures after heavy rain.
  • Permits, entry rules and seasonal closures change; check official sources before you go.
  • Roads are slow and the monsoon brings landslides; keep buffer days.
  • Follow community rules at village-managed sites.

What to pack

  • Rain jacket and quick-dry clothing
  • Walking shoes with grip
