Gulmarg, the meadow of flowers, lies at about 2,650 metres in Baramulla district, around 50 km from Srinagar. It was a summer retreat for Kashmir's rulers and later for the British, who laid out its golf course. Today it is best known for the Gulmarg Gondola and for powder skiing on the slopes of Apharwat.
Things to do in Gulmarg change completely with the season. From December to March, it is snow: skiing, snowboarding, sledging and gondola rides above the clouds. From May to October, the meadow is green, the gondola leads to snowfields and views, and walks go to Khilanmarg and Alpather Lake.
One full day covers the gondola and main viewpoints; two days allow skiing or longer walks. Many visitors stay in Srinagar and visit on a day trip.
For how to get there, when to go and where to stay, see our Gulmarg travel guide.

Gondola and snow
Ride the Gulmarg Gondola
The gondola runs in two phases. Phase 1 climbs from Gulmarg to Kongdori at about 3,050 metres, with meadows and snow depending on the season. Phase 2 continues to near the top of Apharwat at close to 4,000 metres, among the highest cable cars in the world, with views across the Pir Panjal and, on clear days, to Nanga Parbat.
Tickets are sold online through the official system and sell out on busy days; book early. Phase 2 may close in high winds or bad weather. It is very cold at the top in all seasons.
- Time needed
- 3–4 hours for both phases

Gulmarg has groomed beginner slopes near the resort and some of the most famous off-piste powder skiing in Asia from the top of the gondola. Ski schools and certified instructors offer lessons for beginners, and equipment can be rented locally. Experienced skiers going off-piste should hire a certified guide and check avalanche conditions.

Summer meadows and walks
Walk or ride to Khilanmarg
Khilanmarg is a meadow above Gulmarg, reached by a walk of about 5 km through pine forest or by pony. In early summer it is covered in flowers, and it offers wide views of the valley and the Himalaya, including Nanga Parbat on clear days. In winter it becomes a ski slope.
- Time needed
- 3–4 hours
- Best time
- June to September
Hike to Alpather Lake
Alpather Lake lies below the Apharwat peaks at around 3,800 metres, reached from the gondola's upper station by a walk or pony ride. It stays frozen until early summer and is at its best from June to September. The altitude makes the walk tiring; go slowly.

Walk along Ningle Nallah
Ningle Nallah is a stream that flows from the Apharwat snowfields and Alpather Lake through a valley of pine forest and meadows. A walk along it is peaceful and far from the crowds.
Walk the golf course meadow

The Gulmarg Golf Club, established in the colonial era, has one of the highest green golf courses in the world. Visitors can play by arrangement or simply walk the edges of the meadow.
