Pahalgam, at about 2,200 metres in Anantnag district, is about 90 km from Srinagar. It sits at the meeting of the East and West Lidder streams, surrounded by pine forest and mountains. For centuries it was a shepherds' village; today it is one of Kashmir's main resorts and the base for the Amarnath Yatra.
The best things to do in Pahalgam are in the side valleys: Betaab Valley, Aru and Chandanwari, all reached by local taxis. Along the Lidder there are riverside walks, rafting and trout fishing, and from Aru, treks lead to the Kolahoi glacier and the Tarsar and Marsar lakes.
Two to three days is ideal. Local rules require visitors to use Pahalgam's own taxis for the side valleys, and access to some meadows has been restricted at times; check the latest situation locally.
For how to get there, when to go and where to stay, see our Pahalgam travel guide.
