Things to Do in Bikaner: Junagarh Fort, Havelis, Camels & Bhujia

A desert trading city with a fort that was never taken, merchant havelis in red sandstone, a camel breeding farm and the snack that made its name famous across India.

5 min read · Bikaner, Rajasthan, India

Bikaner was founded in 1488 by Rao Bika, a son of Jodhpur's founder Rao Jodha, and grew into a wealthy stop on the caravan routes across the Thar. Unlike most Rajasthani capitals, its fort stands on the plain rather than a hill, and it is known for never having been captured.

The city sees far fewer visitors than Jaipur or Jaisalmer, which is part of its appeal. Two days covers Junagarh Fort and the old city's havelis on one day, and the Karni Mata temple and camel research centre on the other.

For how to get there, when to go and where to stay, see our Bikaner travel guide.

Inside Junagarh Fort

Junagarh was built in the late 16th century by Raja Rai Singh, a general in Akbar's army. Behind plain outer walls are richly decorated palaces: Anup Mahal, with red and gold lacquer work, Phool Mahal, with mirror and glass inlay, and Badal Mahal, painted with blue clouds, a rare sight in the desert. The museum includes a World War I biplane.

Visits are guided in groups through the palace rooms, which helps with the history.

You must enter barefoot, so bring socks if you prefer. It is not for everyone, but it is one of the most extraordinary temples in India.
