Things to Do in Jodhpur: Mehrangarh, the Blue City & Marwar Experiences

A fort on a cliff, a sea of indigo houses below it, and a Clock Tower market where the evening starts with a mirchi bada and a glass of makhaniya lassi.

6 min read · Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India

Jodhpur is the second-largest city in Rajasthan and the historic capital of Marwar, founded by Rao Jodha in 1459. It sits on the edge of the Thar Desert, and its skyline is dominated by Mehrangarh Fort, which rises around 120 metres above the plain on a sheer rock outcrop.

Below the fort, the old city's houses are washed in shades of blue, which gives Jodhpur its nickname. Most of the best things to do here are within a few kilometres of each other: the fort and its museum, the royal cenotaphs at Jaswant Thada, the Clock Tower market, and the lanes of the blue old town.

Two days is a comfortable amount of time, including a half-day trip to the temples and dunes of Osian.

For how to get there, when to go and where to stay, see our Jodhpur travel guide.

Must-see experiences in Jodhpur

Explore Mehrangarh Fort

Walls and palaces of Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur
Mehrangarh Fort

Mehrangarh is one of the largest and best-preserved forts in India, and it is run as a museum by a trust set up by the former royal family. The entrance climbs through a series of seven gates, some still marked by cannonball impacts and the handprints of royal widows. Inside are palaces with carved sandstone screens, the gilded Phool Mahal, Sheesh Mahal and galleries of palanquins, howdahs, weapons and miniature paintings.

The audio guide is excellent and worth taking. From the ramparts you get the classic view of the blue city spreading out below. There is a lift for part of the climb for visitors who need it.

Walk the Blue City

The blue-washed houses are concentrated in Brahmpuri and the lanes between the fort and the Clock Tower. The blue was traditionally associated with Brahmin households, and is also said to keep houses cooler and deter insects. The best way to see it is on foot, walking down from the fort through the narrow lanes, or with a local guide who can show you stepwells, small temples and viewpoints.

The lanes are residential, so be respectful when taking photographs of homes and people.

See Jaswant Thada

Jaswant Thada

A short drive from Mehrangarh, Jaswant Thada is a cenotaph built in 1899 for Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, carved from marble so thin that parts of it glow in the sun. It stands among small gardens and a lake, and is a quiet counterpoint to the fort. Musicians often play inside.

Visit Umaid Bhawan Palace

Umaid Bhawan Palace

Completed in 1943, Umaid Bhawan is one of the largest private residences in the world. It is divided between the royal family's home, a luxury hotel and a museum. The museum wing covers the palace's Art Deco design and the family's history, with a collection of clocks and vintage cars outside.

Markets and food

Browse Sardar Market and the Clock Tower

Clock Tower and Sardar Market in Jodhpur's old city
Ghanta Ghar and Sardar Market

Sardar Market, built around the Ghanta Ghar (Clock Tower), is the busiest part of the old city. Spices, textiles, bandhani fabric, silver, lac bangles and leather juttis are the main things to buy. It is loud, crowded and enjoyable, especially in the late afternoon. Bargaining is expected.

Eat Jodhpur's street food

Jodhpur's signature snack is the mirchi bada, a large green chilli stuffed with spiced potato and deep-fried in gram-flour batter. Around the Clock Tower you will also find pyaaz kachori and makhaniya lassi, thick saffron-coloured lassi topped with cream. For a full meal, try a Marwari thali or ker sangri, a dish of desert beans and berries.

Shop for antiques and textiles

Jodhpur is known for its furniture and antique warehouses on the city's outskirts, and for bandhani (tie-dye) textiles and leather juttis in the old city. Large items can be shipped, but compare prices and check what exactly you are buying before paying.

Adventure and offbeat experiences

Fly the zipline over Mehrangarh

A zipline circuit has operated over the fort's walls and lakes for years, with several lines that give you a view of Mehrangarh few visitors see. Check that it is running when you visit, and note the age and weight limits.

Time needed
About 1.5 hours

Adventure seekers, older children

Walk the Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park

Next to Mehrangarh, this park has restored the rocky land around the fort with native desert plants. Walking trails cross volcanic rock and small canyons, with views up to the fort walls. Mornings and late afternoons are best; it gets very hot at midday.

Time needed
1–2 hours
Good for
Nature lovers, walkers

Discover the stepwells

Toorji ka Jhalra, a restored 18th-century stepwell near the Clock Tower, has become a popular gathering spot with cafés around it. It is a good example of the water architecture that desert cities depended on.

Time needed
30 minutes

Take a village safari

Several operators run half-day trips to Bishnoi villages south of Jodhpur. The Bishnoi community is known for protecting trees and wildlife, and you often see blackbuck and chinkara near the villages. Visits usually include potters and weavers' homes.

Time needed
Half a day
Good for
Culture and wildlife interest

Watch sunset at Kaylana Lake

Kaylana is an artificial lake about 8 km west of the city, built in the late 19th century. Low rocky hills surround it, and it is a quiet place to watch the sun set and see migratory birds in winter. Boating is sometimes available.

At the southern end of Mehrangarh stands the Chamunda Mata Temple, dedicated to the fort's guardian goddess, whose idol Rao Jodha brought from Mandore. It is especially busy during Navratri.

Time needed
20 minutes, combined with the fort

See Mehrangarh lit up at night

After dark the fort is floodlit, and the rooftop restaurants of the old city and the area around Toorji ka Jhalra give a clear view of it. It is one of the most memorable sights in Rajasthan and a good way to end a day in Jodhpur.

Mandore Gardens

Mandore, the older capital of Marwar before Jodhpur, is a short drive north. Its gardens hold the cenotaphs of earlier rulers, built in temple-like red sandstone rather than the usual domed style.
